Directed by Matthieu Ricard, with narration by Richard Gere, and interviews with His Holiness the 14th Dalai Lama.
The Spirit of Tibet: Journey to Enlightenment is a 1998 documentary film tracing the life story of Dilgo Khyentse Rinpoche from his birth in eastern Tibet, to years in deep meditation retreat, to a narrow escape through the Chinese invasion of Tibet, to his global efforts to preserve and transmit sacred Buddhist teachings. The biographical film explores the rich world of Tibetan Buddhist art, sacred rituals, philosophy, and the role of the lama (spiritual teacher) as a living example of inner transformation. Dilgo Khyentse Rinpoche (1910–1991), a most-revered Tibetan spiritual leader of the 20th century, was a master dharma teacher, meditation practitioner, poet, and writer.
